Optimize Your Beauty Sleep

You’ve mostly likely heard the phrase “beauty sleep” and maybe even wondered why is it called that?  It’s actually not some arbitrary term but rather rooted in some truth.

Sleep is instrumental in impacting the way you look.  There are a lot of processes at play within your body while you are asleep and the effects of them are most apparently visible in your face.  Here are some guidelines to help you optimize your beauty:

Adequate Sleep

Most importantly, try to make it a priority to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.  When you don’t get an adequate amount of sleep, your body can’t recover from the day and as a result, it can lead to inflammation, breakouts, and more visible wrinkle lines. This is especially important for women, who generally require more sleep than men do according to clinical studies.  When you’re sleeping, your facial muscles get to relax and you naturally produce melatonin which is a skin protecting antioxidant.  Also, while your body is resting at night, the growth hormone is at work, repairing damaged cells and tissues within your face as well as your hair.  Cell repair, breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid all leads to a glowing complexion.

High thread count pillowcase 

The higher the thread count, the softer the fabric, which means the less likely it is to scratch your skin and cause cell damage.  Also, it’s important to wash your pillowcase regularly.

Facial Moisturizer

Use a facial moisturizer at night, preferably one that is a night specific formula.  Facial lotion helps your skin to rehydrate and depending on the formula, help with repairing skin cells.  It’s important to hydrate your skin because when your skin is dry, your body overcompensates for the dryness and naturally produces extra oil, which in turn can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.  Also, when your skin is dehydrated, there is a tendency to have visible bags under your eyes.

Diet

Try not to eat high sugar or high sodium foods.  If you like to drink cocktails, wine and/or beer, try to consume moderate amounts of alcohol as alcohol interferes with your sleep quality and it contains sugar.  Sugar has been proven to cause wrinkles earlier.  Again, you want to make sure you are well hydrated so in addition to regularly using a facial moisturizer, you want drink plenty of water throughout the day.
